We’ve recently added campsite photos for all Huntington Lake Campgrounds including Catavee, Deer Creek, Kinnikinnick, Lower Billy Creek and Upper Billy Creek. Along with Rancheria campground, we now have campsite photos for all of the 6 campgrounds around Huntington Lake in the beautiful Sierra Nevada. All of the campgrounds are at about 7,000 feet in elevation and are open from May through early October (weather permitting).

In addition to camping, you’ll find a variety of outdoor recreation activities here including: boating, fishing, sailing, swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, exploring historic sites and wildlife viewing. Huntington Lake also has a marina and boat rentals.

Catavee

Catavee Campground is nestled on a bluff overlooking Huntington Lake and adjacent to Bear Creek. Some of the 24 campsites have a view of the lake and others of the creek.  A forest of fir and pine trees offer some nice privacy and shade. Each campsite has a paved parking spur, table, food locker, fire ring and grate. The campground has drinking water and flush toilets.

Deer Creek

Deer Creek Campground is right on the shores of Huntington Lake and has 28 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs. All sites have a paved parking spur, table, food storage locker, fire ring and grate. The campground has a few double campsites and campsites 8-13 are right on the water.

Kinnikinnick

Probably one of the trickier campground names to spell (and particularly challenging to say three times really fast), Kinnikinnick is derived from a Native American herbal smoking mixture made from leaves or barks. Kinnikinnick Campground sits adjacent to Huntington Lake with some campsites enjoying lake views. Each of the 27 campsites have a paved parking spur, table, food storage locker, fire ring and grate. The campground has drinking water and flush toilets.

Lower Billy Creek

This is the smallest of the Huntington Lake campgrounds with 10 campsites, but it’s right on the shores of the lake. The campsites are fairly spread out offering some nice privacy and a few are waterfront. Double campsites include 7, 8 and 9. Each site has a paved parking spur, table, fire ring, grate and food storage locker.

Upper Billy Creek

Upper Billy Creek Campground is located across the road from brother Lower Billy Creek and has 36 campsites set among a forest of cedar, fir and pine trees. A few campsites have nice views of the lake and there are 6 double campsites. There’s a nice picnic area here, as well as a community fire ring and BBQ grills. Drinking water and flush toilets are available at Upper Billy Creek.

Rancheria

Rancheria is the grand-daddy of the Huntington Lake campgrounds with 124 campsites (61 tent-only and 63 for tents, trailers and RVs – up to 40 feet). The campground is located on the shores and hillside of Huntington Lake. Each campsite has a table, fire ring, grate and food storage locker. The campground has drinking water and flush toilets.

  1. Why do not have College Campground at Huntington Lake, any chances of adding it?

  2. Why do my reservations keep getting cancelled every year? I make a reservation six months in advance and for the last 3 years they have been cancelled with short notice (this time 3 days before my trip start) due to forest service needing to be done. Why is this not managed better? When a reservation is offered i think a stronger commitment should be provided to back it. I am beginning to think your reservation system means nothing. This is frustrating because I have planned this and had to coordinate with several other people as well as requested time off from work. I can’t easily just change the date with such short notice.

    • Hi Niki, Sorry you’ve had your reservations cancelled the last few years. Other than this year (Covid), we’re not sure what the reason was the Forest Service didn’t open. If it was construction related – they generally can’t get that done in the winter months so maybe it pushed into the camping season.
