Campfire permits are required in most national forest campgrounds in California, unless fire restrictions are in place. This also includes other designated areas and dispersed camping. Some National Parks (like Yosemite) do not require campfire permits.
The campfire permits are free and required for campfires, barbeques, and camp stoves. Permits are available at the local Ranger station or online at Campfire Permit – Ready for Wildfire. Campfires must also be attended by a responsible person at all times and completely extinguished after use.
It is always a good idea to visit the various National Forest websites to check on fire restrictions. You can also check the status of California wildfires at CAL FIRE.
