San Elijo State Beach has closed a few campsites because of severe bluff erosion from the recent “atmospheric river” storms that hit the region in December and January.
The damage is on the south end of the campground near the amphitheater. Campsites 61, 62, 63, 64 and 65 have been closed until a full assessment of the damage is completed.
The entire campground at San Elijo State Beach is currently closed as it undergoes refurbishing (adding gravel to campsites). It should reopen in early March 2023. Nearby South Carlsbad State Beach is also refurbishing campsites but some of the campground/campsites remain open.
The good news is that when San Elijo State Beach campground reopens, campsites 56-72 will only be available by walk-up (first come, first serve) tent only camping for a limited time. If you’re like most people that can’t get a campsite reservation, now’s your chance to get a first come first serve campsite. Remember the walk-up sites are for tent camping only. Try our Campsite Assist service and get availability alerts if still can’t get a campsite.
California State Parks and campground management are also strongly encouraging people to keep their distance from the cliffs/bluffs along the beach. Over the past few years people have been injured and killed from collapsing bluffs.
This time of year also sees the highest tides (aka “king tides”), which have also contributed to beach and bluff erosion.
You may want to take care when walking out to the water during high tide. Budget permitting, sand will be dredged and placed back on the beach before summer arrives.
