Cholla – Area Recreation

For our solar-powered fans, Cholla campground is one of the largest all-solar powered campground in the United States. There is plenty to see and do here including fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, a variety of water sports, hiking, biking, horseback riding, OHV riding, picnicking and many more outdoor recreational activities. The Cholla Recreation Site is located in the Tonto National Forest and includes almost 3 million acres of rugged and beautiful scenery ranging from desert to pine-forested mountains.

Burnt Corral (82 campsites on a bluff above Apache Lake) and Windy Hill (347 campsites also on Roosevelt Lake) are two other campgrounds in the area you may consider.

28 Comments on “Cholla”

  1. Larry Riggs says:

We have a 35′ 5th wheel, seen the sites that we can fit in to?
    Is there water & electricity?

  2. What is nightly fee at Cholla Campground?

  3. Sandi Pratt says:

One more question – it appears that all of the campgrounds around Roosevelt Lake, Apache Lake, etc. are “first come, first served” and do not offer hookups. Are there any RV campsites in the area that allow reservations and have water/propane hookups?

  4. Janine Looper says:

How many people can stay in a double campsite at Cholla campground?

  5. Is there an actual campsite map of the sites. If so could it be emailed to me. Save us time from driving around. We’re coming in this weekend. Thanks

  6. Hi it says pets are OK BUT it says nothing about dog breeds, weight limit or number of pets allowed… Does anyone know the answer. Would love to visit but I have 2 great Danes and a small terrier as well… would they all be ok to come? Thanks in advance

    • Hi Mommy T,
“Pets” generally refers to all breeds of dogs and cats, but also may include other domesticated animals and birds. All pets must be on a leash though.

  7. Darryl Cox says:

Is there a limit on tent size at Cholla?

  8. I’m curious regarding lack of water hookups at Cholla, Windyhill etc. Why aren’t there any??

  9. Hello, which tent sites have the best views of the lake at the Buckhorn site? I Thanks!

    • Hi Andrina,
The Cholla campground map (button) may give you an idea, but unfortunately the map does not call out each individual site. In the Buckhorn loop – it appears that those closest to the lake would likely have nice views of the lake. Those include sites 47, 49, 50 and 51.

  10. WESLEY EADES says:

Is the Cholla campsite open at this time(04/06/2020)

  11. Jennifer Nguyen says:

Hi, is the Cholla campsite open now? (5/25/2020)

  12. is there a area where there is swimming at cholla is any spots on the water?

    • Hi Mickey,
Yes, Theodore Roosevelt Reservoir has a few nice swim beach areas. Roosevelt Lake Beach, the Vineyard Canyon Picnic Site and Chunk Beach are good. Other swim areas include: Evans, Kettle Falls, Bradbury Beach, Cloverleaf, Fort Spokane, Keller ferry, Spring Canyon, Porcupine and Hunters.

  13. One more question
at upper Burnt Corral Campground are you aloud to have a fire at night in a fire ring?

  14. Connie Buckner says:

A friend of mine and I would like to reserve a spot at Cholla for two if us Oct 16th-17th with two tents… But she called and could not get through… Is there another way to make reservations? Or can we come to the ranger station to make reservations…

Can a quad and a fat boy motorcycle be ridden at the Cholla campgrounds?

    • Hi Connie,

All Cholla campsites are first-come, first-serve from May 1 through October 31. Odd numbered campsites can be reserved from November 1 through April 30. You can go to the ranger station/campground and pay for a campsite (and occupy it that day), but you can’t pay for / reserve it for a future arrival date. Also, I wasn’t able to confirm if a quad or fat boy motorcycle can be ridden in the campground.
