Upper Hospital Flat Campground offers a reservable group site and dispersed camping (first-come, first-serve) in a scenic meadow in the Pinaleno Mountains. It is also near Big Creek. The campground is named after a field hospital that was during the 1880s.
The group site can accommodate up to 8 vehicles (up to 40 feet) and 50 people. It also has picnic tables, a campfire ring, BBQ grills and a parking area. Toilets are not available. Campers must bring one portable/self-contained toilet for every 15 people. Dead-and-down firewood may be collected in and around the campsite. Cell service is not available in the area.
The road leading into the group site is mainly suitable for higher-clearance vehicles.
Other campgrounds in the area include Treasure Park – East, Treasure Park – North, Lower Twilight Group, Upper Twilight Group, Upper Arcadia and Stockton Pass. Riggs Lake campground is also about 11 miles away.
Outdoor recreation in the area include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, stargazing and wildlife viewing.
The campground lies along the Swift Trail Scenic Drive, which takes visitors from the Sonoran Desert at 2,900 feet to alpine meadows and forest on the 9,000+ foot ridges of the Pinaleño Range. Because of its diverse habitat, the area is well-known for birding and wildlife watching.
