Butte Lake Campground has 101 single-family campsites and is located near the lake in the NE corner of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Reservations are available for most campsites at this remote campground. Group camping (6 sites) and an equestrian campsite (1 site) are also available (reservations required). The equestrian site can have up to 8 animals, 10 people and 6 vehicles. The campground is usually open early June to mid October.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 35 feet). Each site also has a table, food storage locker, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include drinking water (seasonal), flush (seasonal), vault toilets and trash collection. A boat ramp is also located near the lake. Cell service is not available.
Butte Lake has a large black lava flow running into it, creating rocky shores and interesting views for visitors in kayaks and canoes to explore. The lake has non-motorized boating. Other activities include fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
Lassen national Park contains 300 active volcanic domes and many hydrothermal features, such as mud pots and steam vents. Lassen Peak is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascades, and the second most recent volcano to erupt in the lower 48 of the United States before Mount Saint Helens. Visitors can also can explore the Subway Cave, an underground lava tube, in the adjacent Lassen National Forest from late April through November.
