Chamise Flat campground has about 17-20 dispersed (at large) camping areas and is located along the Upper Kern River about 12 miles north of Kernville. It is open year-round.
Most camping areas are quite large and can accommodate large groups with tents, trailers or RVs. There are also several areas for just tent camping, but you must camp at least 25 feet away from the River’s edge. The area offers dry camping and does not have any facilities. There is no trash collection, campsite tables, water or toilets. Everything is pack in / pack out.
Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, river rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and wildlife viewing. Lake Isabella is also about 14 miles away and offers a variety of water sport activities. You can also head on up to the ‘Trail of the Giants’ (40 miles up the road) to hike through a stand of giant Sequoia trees.
Other campgrounds in the area include Fairview upriver and Gold Ledge downriver.

Been there many times. Easy access. I recommend bringing a privacy tent and 5 gallon bucket with plenty of trash bags for your sanitation issues as the porta potties are nasty
But it’s free and I was always grateful for it
