Chilcoot Campground Plumas National Forest California

Chilcoot Overview

Chilcoot 031

Chilcoot Campground has about 39 single-family (mixed-used) campsites located in the Plumas national Forest among a forest of Alder, Cottonwood and Pine trees.  The Beckwourth Complex Fire (Jul-Oct, 2021) did burn some trees in the campground and cleanup is ongoing, but most campsites and facilities were not burned. Our campsite photos were taken after the fire (April, 2022).

Chilcoot is the only campground of the five in the area that is not near the lake (about 3 miles from the dam). Little Last Chance Creek flows through the campground. All sites are paved and level. Four (4) of the campsites (37-40) are tent only. The campsites are large and spread out and each have a table, bear box, fire ring and grill. There are no hookups.

Chilcoot campground is generally open from mid April through September. The campground has drinking water, vault and flush toilets. Firewood is also available for sale from the campground host.

Other campgrounds in the area include Big CoveCottonwood Springs, Frenchman and Spring Creek.

Chilcoot Creek – Area Recreation

Nearby Frenchman Lake was created in 1962 when the California Department of Water Resources dammed Little Las Chance Creek. The shoreline is 21 miles and has become a great place to boat, fish, explore and play. During the summer, visitors can also enjoy hiking, mountain biking, hunting, wildlife viewing, water skiing, jet skiing and other water sports. Winter activities range from snowmobiling to ice fishing and cross-country skiing.

  2. Susan Whitenack says:

Stayed in site 29. It’s close to the highway, but not too noisy. There are 2 direct walking paths from the site to the creek without additional public access to those paths. Site 28 seemed to have the same but also has a public access path adjacent to the site. The tree coverage is good and you could get 2 8 person tents and a 4-6 person tent towards the back. Lots of shade. Only downfall was the onslaught of mosquitos. No amount of repellent could help. Creek was as cold as Tahoe and not really swimable. Sit is close to bathrooms and the long term host is really nice. Firewood sold for $10 bundle. Host was engaging and informative as there was water issues during our stay. 3/5 due to mosquitos
