Crab Flats Campground California

Crab Flats Road
Running Springs, California 92382

Crab Flats campground is the place to go if you’re into solitude, stargazing and OHVing! The campground is remote and has 29 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs. There are 23 reservable sites and 6 first-come, first-serve campsites.  The sites are fairly large and set among tall pines, oaks and cedar trees. The campground is reached by driving about 4 miles on a dirt forest service road. The road is usually in good shape, but not recommended for large RVs as it gets a bit narrow in spots.

Campground amenities include vault toilets and drinking water. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate. Running Springs is your closest town (for supplies) and is about 9 miles away.  Group camping is also available nearby (Tent Peg Group Camp).

Crab Flats – Area Recreation

The area is very popular for OHVing as there are a number of forest service roads to explore. Other outdoor activities include hiking, mountain biking and picnicking. Wildlife and stargazing are also nice here. Green Valley Lake is also about 6 miles away and has some nice fishing.

Other campgrounds in the area include Fisherman’s Group Camp, Dogwood, North Shore and Green Valley Lake.

  1. I certainly would NOT recommend horseback riding in area. This is a DESIGNATED OHV area, and horses are far too easily spooked by motorcycles, quads, etc. I have come across the odd equestrian here at times, and I don’t mind sharing the trails in principle, but the reality is horses and motorcycles do not mix. For the safety of all riders and animals, keep your horses off these trails.

My “boyfriend” insisted i should ride the dirt bike that i have never rode before on the high sandy dirt road just before the camp ground, is it me or is there something not quite right with this??
