Deer Creek – Huntington Lake Campground Sierra National Forest California

Deer Creek – Huntington Lake Overview

Deer Creek Huntington Lake 017

Deer Creek Campground is on the shorts of Huntington Lake in the Sierra National Forest and has 28 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs. Deer Creek Campground is open early May to early October and has flush toilets and drinking water. The Bear Cove picnic area is also located adjacent to the campground.

Our favorite Deer Creek campsites are: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 19 and 20. Campsites 8-13 are right on the water (boat mooring allowed at some of these campsites). Campsites 7, 15, 18, 24 and 28 are ‘double sites’. Each campsite also has a paved spur, table, fire ring, grate and food storage locker. Boats can also e moored near some of the campsites.

Deer Creek – Huntington Lake Area Recreation

The Huntington Lake area offers a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, boating, sailing, swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and exploring the historic sites in the area. The lake also has a marina, boat ramp/launch and boat rentals. There are also a few stores and restaurants in the area.

Other campgrounds around Huntington Lake are: Rancheria, Catavee, Lower Billy Creek, Upper Billy Creek, College, and Kinnikvnnick.

  1. Tom Boswell says:

How do I make reservations. Are you busy this time of year?

  2. Hi. I am trying to choose between any of the campgrounds surrounding Huntington Lake. Do ANY of the campgrounds have pay-showers available?

    • Hi Shon,
There are no showers available at any of the Huntington Lake campgrounds.

    • Salvador says:

Hello! Is the campground currently closed due to Covid? I have a reservation for Memorial weekend!

      • Hi Salvador,
Deer Creek campground at Huntington Lake is currently closed. However, we are hearing (finger’s crossed) that it, and other USFS campgrounds in California should be opening up later in May. The USFS current order for the Pacific Southwest Region is that closures will remain in effect through May 15, 2020. This means the campground map open soon after that, or they could always extend the order.

  3. Patricia says:

Are you still closed? received an email for a cancelled day 18th-19th depatrure of this month. But, not for 14th-18th departure. Please clarify.
    Thank you

    • Hi Patricia,
Deer Creek campground at Huntington Lake is still closed due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, according to the US Forest Service it is tentatively scheduled to reopen June 19th.

  4. Kyle James Beaird says:

    Howdy,

I recently received an email stating that the Deer Creek campground will be closed from June 19th to June 25th. Two questions:
    1. Does this closure only apply to Deer Creek, or will it affect all camping areas on Huntington Lake?
    2. What is the reason for this closure? There have been zero “forest orders” posted in regard to any date after the 19th, so I am confused as to what the reasoning is for this closure.

    Thank you for your time.

  5. aaron potash says:

How large are the deer creek food storage lockers?

  6. Alondra Avila says:

I booked site #5 which shares a parking spot with site #6. We have a trailer with slide outs. How do I check if site #6 doesn’t have a trailer with slide outs? or will we both fit?

    • Hi Alondra,
Campsites #5 and #6 both have a parking pad of 30 feet long and 10 feet wide, so not sure if side-by-side trailers with slide outs would fit. Also, I’m not sure who you may contact to see if your neighbor will have a slide out. You might try asking Rec.gov

  7. benny simonzad says:

Could I bring my inflatable raft with an outboard motor and launch it from my trailer directly by my campsite? or would i have to drive to the closest marina. my boat has wheels that I can just roll into the water. Thank you
