Fossil Falls Campground has 11 first-come, first-serve campsites and is located in a unique volcanic landscape at the base of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Sites are fairly large and spaced out. Campsite 1 actually has two camping areas (pictures 1A and 1B). Campsite #9 is ADA.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 35 feet). Keep in mind that the campground road can get pretty rutted so your trailer/RV may need high-clearance. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include drinking water and vault toilets. There is no trash collection so please pack it all out. The water can be collected from a well (pump) near the entrance of the campground.
Other campgrounds in the area include Diaz Lake, Tuttle Creek, Portuguese Joe, Lone Pine and Whitney Portal.
Hiking, rock climbing and exploring the unique volcanic landscape are popular activities. The short Fossil Falls Trail will lead you though the smooth, polished remnants of a 20,000 year-old lava flow and is an excellent location to stretch your legs on a long road trip. The flow itself is a popular destination for rappelers and rock climbers. Petroglyphs and even a lava tube are also in the area. Other activities include picnicking, stargazing, mountain biking and wildlife viewing.
