Hell Gate Campground is located in a beautiful area next to the South Fork of the Trinity River at 2,300 feet in elevation. Unfortunately the fires of 2020 burned through the campground and did quite a bit of damage. Only 12 of the 17 campsites are available (first-come, first-serve). The camp roads are rough and the parking spurs are uneven. Some campsites don’t have tables.
As of June 2023 maintenance and some upgrades have been done, but the campground still has a long way to go. Water is not available but it does have recycle/trash collection. Vault toilets are also provided. Cell service is poor in the area. Campsites can accommodate tents, RVs and trailers (up to 16 feet). Most of the 12 sites have a table, fire ring and grill. Shade is not available except at campsite #12.
Forest Glen Campground is also just a mile away and was not damaged by the 2020 fires.
Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, kayaking, rafting, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. There’s also a swim beach and nice swimming hole next to the campground.
