Hospital Flat campground has 40 campsites and is located right along side the Upper Kern River about 6.5 north miles of Kernville. Campsites are a bit on the small size, but can accommodate tents, trailers and smaller RVs (up to 30 feet). Campsites 8-10 are ‘walk to’ sites. There are several campsites along the river and many have shade from a variety of trees. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate. Amenities include drinking water and vault toilets.
The campground is also about 40 miles south of a large stand of giant Sequoia Trees (“The Trail of the Giants”).
Rafting, kayaking and fishing are very popular along the Upper Kern. Other outdoor recreation includes swimming, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. Lake Isabella is also just 5 miles away and offers a variety of water sports.
The other 5 Upper Kern River campgrounds are: Headquarters, Limestone, Fairview, Gold Ledge and Camp Three. Chico Flat dispersed camping is also nearby.

There’s lots of flies and yellow jackets in the campground. Need to take a rake to the area where you put your tent. Many rocks and boulders. Hard to find a flat area.
The campgrounds by the river are nice but day campers walk through your site to get to the river.
Really hot in July and August . Not all camp sites have shade.
We were in site 7. It says 30-foot RVs. I have a 27-foot toy hauler (30 feet including tongue). It *barely* fit. And it took some skillful maneuvering with a great spotter to get it in the spot. Also, getting out of the campground was a challenge. The road is very narrow and lined with huge boulders. A couple of the turns were pretty tight. I’m talking maybe 8 inches of clearance on each side to make the turn. I would NOT recommend any travel trailer longer than 21 feet or so camp here.
Hi Tricia,
Thanks for the valuable input regarding recommended trailer size at Hospital Flat campground.
