Limestone campground has 19 (mostly shaded) campsites and is on a small hillside above the Upper Kern River about 16 miles north of Kernville. Campsites 8-14 are nearest the river (ranging from 40-80 feet from the campsites).
The campsites are best suited for tent camping, but small RVs and trailers are okay. Each site also has a table, fire ring, grate and paved parking pad. Amenities include vault toilets and trash collection. Potable (drinking) water is not available. Cell service is also not available in the area.. There’s also a nice river rafting put-in near the campground.
Limestone – Area Recreation
The town of Kernville has many shops, restaurants, bars, a grocery store, gas stations and a nice park along the banks of the Kern River. The campground is also about 40 miles south of a large stand of giant Sequoia Trees (“The Trail of the Giants”) – definitely worth a drive up to see.
Besides rafting and kayaking, visitors can enjoy fishing, swimming, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. Lake Isabella is just 5 miles away and offers a variety of water sports.
The other 5 Upper Kern River campgrounds are: Headquarters, Fairview, Gold Ledge, Hospital Flat and Camp Three.

Just an FYI; according to the Sequoia National Forest website, there is no water at this campground. However, I have not been to this campground since 1983 to substantiate that.

Thanks for the heads up. We will try and confirm whether there is any water at Limestone campground.
There is no running water at Limestone Campground on the Kern River. I have been camping at Limestone for 65 consecutive summers. You can fill up water jugs 4 miles down the road at McNally’s Restaurant and Bar/country store.
The Number of Campsites listing of 22 is incorrect. Some of what used to be 22 campsites were eliminated decades ago. There are, and have been, 19 sites since then.

There used to be an active spring that was across the hwy. coming out of the mountain. with current climate activity I can’t be sure
You are correct. It was the perfect water supply back in the day. Approx 2002 after the McNally wildfire wiped out the area, they deemed the water supply had been compromised and that the testing of the water determined no longer safe to consume. It was some of the best tasting water.
Do any of the sites have direct access to the water?

Campsites 8-14 are nearest the river (ranging from 40-80 feet from the campsites). You can walk from each of these campsites right down to the river w/o having to cross a road, trail or another campsite.
