Malibu Creek State Park – Area Recreation

Malibu Creek State Park is located just 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The beautiful park has over 4,000 acres, featuring hiking, fishing, bird watching, wildlife viewing and horseback riding opportunities. There are 15 miles of streamside trail through oak and sycamore woodlands and chaparral-covered slopes. Malibu Creek is the principal water-course of the Santa Monica Mountains – from Boney Mountain to Malibu Lagoon. The park was the center of Chumash Native American life for centuries and was once used to film numerous movies and TV shows, such as Planet of the Apes and M*A*S*H.

Hello. I thought I booked site 57 for tonight and tomorrow. I evidently did not hit submit and I am on my way to you. I can’t get through to anyone to try to book this. Do you have sites available? Please call me at your earlier convenience. Thank you.

    • Hi Michelle,
CampsitePhotos.com is not associated with the campgrounds we have listed on our site. We provide the photos, camping info and links to check availability/make a reservation. ReserveCalifornia.com handles CA State Park reservations. I did a quick check and space is available tonight and tomorrow night at Malibu Creek State Park. You can also visit ReserveCalifornia.com to check/reserve or call them at 800 444-7275.

  2. Hi, do you have the general date when these campsite photos were taken? Just doing some comparison of photos and I think maybe these are from a while ago. Some of the trees seem to be gone now in photos by others. Thanks!

    • Hi Vuthy,

We took the Malibu Creek State Park photos back in 2015, but are planning to take new photos of the campground since the Woolsey fire went through there last year. Look for new photos of the campsite later this year.

      • Thank you for the clarification. I noticed your site #29 photo has a large tree with 4 thick trunks on the left. On ReserveCalifornia, their site picture shows a tree with only one trunk left. I think it’s the same tree, post-damage unfortunately.

      • You are welcome Vuthy!
And yes, vegetation will change over time, especially in the event of the fire. The campsites in the photos are the correct campsite #s though.

    • I visited the park June 9, 2019, to do some hiking and scooped out the campground. It’s a small though nice campground with varied sites. Sadly, a lot of the trees shown in these older pics are gone. The tree in #29 is just a small charred stump, but the park shows good signs of recovery. Will be camping there in a week!

  3. Do you have any photos of the Group Site at Malibu Creek?

    • Hi Shawna,
We don’t have the group site photos of Malibu Creek State Park yet. However, we are going to reshoot the entire campground this Thursday and will be sure to include the group photos. Look for all new photos (including group sites) up on the site later next week.

  4. Hello,
We have a reservation for camping with our 19 foot trailer on August 2 and 3, 2019. We know check out time is noon but we need to stay until 2:00 p.m. that day. Is it possible to move the car and trailer to a day parking place at check out time for us to leave it there for 2 more hours? If so, can you let me know how and who to contact? I already tried the 818-880-0367 number and listened to the long message and it referred me to 818-880-0363 which I tried and is no longer a working number/disconnected. Thank you in advance for any help you can give us. Sincerely, Cathy Howard

    • Hi Cathy,
Unfortunately these park/campground numbers don’t reach a live person most of the time. I can tell you that there are two large parking lots at Malibu Creek State Park. One is soon after you enter (on Park Entrance Road), coordinates: 34.099077, -118.714229. This is rarely full and has plenty of room to park your vehicle and trailer from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. You will have to vacate the campsite by 12:00pm. There’s another parking lot at Malibu Creek State Park trailhead, but there isn’t as much space and that lot may be pretty full depending on the day. And when you’re there, you can also touch base with the camp host or ranger to let them know what you’ll be doing.

  5. The photo of site 62 does not show a table. Maybe it’s out of the view. Please confirm it does have table. Thanks.

    • Hi Tim,

Yes, Malibu Creek State Park campsite #62 does have a table. Here’s an updated photo we shot in June, 2019. We will be replacing photo on campground page with this as well.

  6. Guillermo Navarro says:

Hello, I’m going camping to Malibu creek in a couple weeks. It’ll be my first time there. I’m looking for a great spot with shade, table and fire pit. Anyone knows which unit fits those amenities? Thanks!

  7. Bradford Kame says:

Hello, I will be staying at campsite #27 at malibu Crrek State Park. Do you know if there is any cell service for Verizon there? I just got back from staying at Leo Carrillo SP and I had to drive to the front entrance in order to get cell service. I could not get any service at the camp site. Thank you.

    • Hi Bradford,
Malibu Creek State Park campground has spotty cell phone reception/service at best. Verizon seems to work a little better, but again – it’s spotty and not very good.

  8. I love hiking and camping at this state park. It’s super hot in the summer though so bring plenty of water. Really nice trails and some of the lots have shade which is nice.

  9. abifrancisco77@yahoo.com says:

Does site 37 have a fire pit or picnic table? Hard to tell from the picture

    • Yes, all single-family campsites will have a table and fire ring/grate at Malibu Creek State Park. The photo of campsite #37 was taken last year so it is current, but the table was temporarily moved. There probably is a new table there now as they were upgraded tables.

  10. Mark Davidson says:

We just stayed at MCSP this last weekend. Site #41 was really not good (contrary to the info here) as it is on a cross road (you’re literally as close to three roads as you can be), but we moved to #22 which was awesome and any of he even numbers up to the 30s would be awesome (to be on outside of loop). Lovely place, super helpful staff. Pity they allow loud music as a noisy neighbor really ruined our first night.

  11. Dear Camp Ranger…

Is there any shades at campsite #36 and #37?
And is these site close to restroom or shower or running water?

    Thanks.

    • Hi Art,
Neither campsite 36 or 37 has any shade over the table/fire pit/tent camping area. Campsite #36 gets a little shade over the parking area from about noon till 5pm. And there are restrooms and showers about 50 yards from both sites. You can actually see the restroom/shower building in the background (toward the left) in the photo of campsite #36. The restrooms have running water.

  12. Natascha Ritter says:

    Hi,
Our RV is 33 feet long. Will it fit in your sites?

    • Hi Natascha,
Unfortunately the largest campsite pad length at Malibu Creek State Park is 30 feet. Most sites range in size from 20 to 30 feet. I doubt the ranger would allow you to park your 33 foot RV in any of the campsite at Malibu Creek State Park. You can click on the ‘Make A Reservation’ button to check availability, pad size and make reservations.

  13. How safe is the campground? For example leaving our unattended Airstream for few ours during the day and for people to stay there?

  14. Diane Guillen says:

Hello, how is the drive to get there? Like is it mountain cliffs lol. We have a trailer and my anxiety can’t take it.

    • Hi Diane, The roads are great – no problem. You’ll either come in on Malibu Canyon Road or Mulholland Highway before entering the Park. Both are safe/major roads. Malibu Canyon Road is a tad windy and on a ridge above Malibu Creek. There are some areas that are quite high above the creek and may spook you a little.

  15. Was wondering, my camper is 25 ft and the campsite says pad length is 24ft
Would they say something there at Malibu creek?
Are they strict and do they measure you rv?

    • Hi Roxanna,
Have not heard how strict the camp host/ranger is regarding measuring RV’s at Malibu Creek State Park. Generally a 24 foot pad will be okay for a 25 foot trailers/RV – if all wheels are on the parking pad surface and there is no overhang out front (into camp road).

  16. Julia Berumen says:

My family and another family is heading to Malibu Creek SP this weekend. We have reserved 31 and 34. I originally saw a map that shows them directly across from each other but then I saw the map on this site showing that they are not. Do you know if they are directly across and, if not, how far apart they are? Also, how much are the tokens for the showers and how long do they last?

  17. Julia Berumen says:

One more thing…do you know how big the tables are?

    • Hi Julia,

Sorry, we don’t have a CampsitePhotos.com employee on site to check and don’t know the size of the tables there. I’m guessing about 7’x 4′.

  18. Daniela Avalos says:

Hi I’m camping at Malibu state park do you know if campsite 31 is for rv? I could swear it is

    • Hi Daniela,
Yes, you can park an RV in campsite #31. The parking pad length is 26 feet and you have a bit of an overhang off the back. The tent pad area is 10×10. You can have up to 3 vehicles and 8 people in that site. Have a great time!

  19. Daniela Avalos says:

Hello me again quick question do you know if campsite 31 has room for tents?

  20. Is there a store of any sorts at this campground even for just ice and fire wood ?

    • Hi Mark,
There is no store at Malibu Creek State Park. Your closest store (grocery, convenience, gas, fast food, etc.) is about 4 miles away – taking Las Virgenes Road north toward the Ventura freeway (101).

  21. How many minutes is each shower token?

  22. scott matzen says:

We are going to malibu creek state park tomorrow…is a campfire allowed?

    • Hi Scott,
Normally (this time of year) – yes, but the Santa Ana winds have been blowing so not sure if they are letting people have campfires. You may try calling before you head out there: 818 880-0367

  23. I would like to know if there are electricity sockets in restrooms for hairdryer.
    thank you

  24. This was such a useful website, I have no idea how I found it however, I am glad I did. I was looking for campsites to stay at a safe place as Harvest Host are few and far in between this area. I found your site and immediately LOVED it. It is very useful to see the campsites. I stayed at Malibu Creek SP and absolutely loved it. WOW, your suggested sites were perfect. #28 looked even however, all of them it seems you need to level on but not much. Thank you for providing this website, it is now marked as a favorite. I wish all states had websites like this, it is very useful. Thank you for creating this site.

  25. Hello, I was wondering if I go on the same day? can I pay for my camping spot? or do I have to book it?

    • Hi Mel,
Unfortunately California State Parks (that take reservations) don’t allow walk-up (first-come, first-serve) camping. You’ll need to have a campsite reservation at Malibu Creek State Park. If the campground is sold out you can always try our Campsite Assist service. It will sent you a text/email alert if a campsite becomes available through cancellation and then you can try and reserve it.
