Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area is the ‘gateway to the tall tress country’ and has a large campground with 160 campsites next to the South Fork Eel River. There are three camping loops – Rock Creek (sites 1-35), Hickey (sites 37 to 97) and Redwood (sites 100 to 162). Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 27 feet). Hike/bike campsites are also available. The campground has a campfire center, drinking water, flush toilets, showers and overflow parking. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grate. Firewood is available for purchase at this campground. Cell service is fair in the area.
Standish-Hickey SRA offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation including camping, hiking along the South Fork Eel River and among giant Redwood trees, biking, photography, wildlife viewing, boating, canoeing/kayaking, swimming, picnicking and fishing. There’s a “world-class” swimming hole you can reach from a trail near the picnic/day-use area in the Hickory Loop. The trail is steep but shore (.3 miles).
Richardson Grove State Park and Benbow Lake SRA are also in the area. It’s about 14 miles to the north and the campground has 170 campsites.
