Tamarack Flat campground has 52 (most large) campsites best suited for tents (trailers & RVs not recommend) and is located about 45 minutes north of Yosemite Valley. From Highway 120, you’ll take Old Big Oak Flat Road for 3 miles to the campground. The one-lane road is freshly paved and takes you through a beautiful forest with great views of the surrounding area.
The campground is at 6,300 feet in elevation and is typically open mid-June to mid-September.
Tamarack Flat is a remote and primitive campground. There are vault toilets, but no potable water. You can treat the nearby water from Tamarack Creek by boiling, using a filter or iodine). Campsites also have a picnic table, food locker (33″ deep x 45″ wide x 18″ high), and fire ring.
Popular outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, backpacking and wildlife viewing. There’s also a service road/trail from the campground that will take you to El Capitan (8.4 miles), Yosemite Falls (11 miles) and Yosemite Valley (16.2 miles). Other recreation in the park includes biking, kayaking, photography, climbing, rock climbing and horseback riding. There are also many historic sites and museums to visit throughout the Park.
