Wakalu Hep Yo Campground Stanislaus National Forest California

Wakalu Hep Yo Overview

Wakalu Hep Yo Campground 050

Wakalu Hep Yo (Wild River) Campground has 49 campsites in a mature conifer and oak forest located next to the North Fork Stanislaus River. All campsites are first-come, first-serve at this beautiful campground.

Most campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Campsites 7 to 24, 28, 29, 33, 34, 41 and 42 are walk-to sites (tent only) and most are very nice (close to river). Parking is available for these at either Village #1, Village #2 or Village #3 parking areas. Each of the walk-to (tent only) sites have parking spaces for 2 vehicles. All camp roads and parking spurs are paved.

Campground amenities include drinking water, vault/flush toilets, showers and trash collection. There’s also a picnic / day use area, river shore trails and a whitewater boat launch. Cell service is poor in the area. Each campsite also has a parking spur (up to 50 feet), table, food storage locker (bear box), fire ring and grill. Firewood is available to purchase from the camp host (site #1).

Calaveras Big Trees State Park is nearby (8 miles) and Black Springs OHV Campground is also in the area (14 miles).

Wakalu Hep Yo Campground – Area Recreation and Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area include whitewater rafting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, wildlife viewing and stargazing.

For over 2000 years the Miwuk people lived seasonally in this canyon, gathering food, and fishing the river. The Miwuk word WaKaLuu means river and Hep Yo describes an untamed or wild force of nature.
