Cayton Campground has 27 campsites (sites 6-20 have electric hookups) and is next to the Dolores River in the San Juan National Forest. There are 16 reservable sites (11 with hookups) and the other 11 are first-come, first-serve (5 with electric hookups). The campground has 2 loops and the lower loop (Loop A – 14 sites) is closer to the river.
Campground amenities include drinking water, vault toilets and trash collection. There is also a dry dump station located at the campground. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 50 feet). Each site also has a table, fire ring and grill. Cell service is not available. Firewood is also available to purchase from the camp host.
Other campgrounds in the area include Mary E, Sunshine, Matterhorn and Priest Lake.
Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The campground is also between the historic mining towns of Rico and Telluride.
