Cimarron Campground Curecanti National Recreation Area Colorado

Cimarron Overview

Cimarron Campground has 21 campsites and is located along the Cimarron River and at the site of an historic narrow gauge railroad town. Crystal Reservoir, near Morrow Point Dam, is also just 1.5 miles away. All campsites are first-come first-serve.

The campground is generally open mid May to mid October. Amenities include potable (drinking) water, flush toilets, trash collection and a dump station. Cell service is not available in the area.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 42 feet). Each site has a gravel parking spurt, table, fire ring and grill. Several pull-through sites are available.  The Cimarron – Curecanti National Recreation Area Visitor Center is also located next to the campground.

Other campgrounds in the area include East Portal, South Rim (Black Canyon of the Gunnison), Ponderosa, Elk Creek, Stevens Creek, Lake Fork and Big Cimarron (about 17 miles away).

Cimarron Campground – Area Recreation and Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, hiking, mountain biking and picnicking. Wildlife viewing is also good in the area. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Blue Mesa Reservoir area also nearby.

At the mouth of Cimarron Creek, just upstream from where it spills into the Gunnison River, stands a reminder of bygone days in railroading. Recently restored locomotive #278, its coal tender, a boxcar, and caboose stand atop the last remaining railroad trestle along the Black Canyon of the Gunnison route. Visitors can see an excellent example of rolling stock railroad cars used on this branch of the Denver & Rio Grande (D&RG) Narrow Gauge Railroad in its heyday.
