Monarch Park Campground (newly renovated in 2024) has 35 campsites and is located next to the South Fork Arkansas River and a short drive north of Monarch Pass on Highway 50. A few beaver ponds are also near the entrance and offer a nice fishing spot for families with young children. Campsites are first-come first-serve in May through July and reservable in August and September.
The campground is at an elevation of about 10,500 feet and is generally open late May to late September. Amenities include drinking water (hand pump), vault toilets and trash collection. You can also purchase firewood from the friendly camp host. Cell service is not available in the area. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a parking spur, table, fire ring and grill.
The nearest RV dump station is at the Poncha Springs Visitor Center located at 7001 Highway 285 (near the intersection of US Highway 285 and US Highway 50) in Poncha Springs, CO.
Other campgrounds in the general area include Cascade, Collegiate Peaks and Lottis Creek.
Popular trails near Monarch Park include Waterdog Lakes, the Monarch Crest Trail and the Hunt and Boss Lakes trails. Wildflowers are abundant on these trails in late summer. The river and nearby ponds provide quality fishing for all ages. Brook trout is the most likely reward for fishing efforts. Other activities include mountain biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
