Paonia State Park includes 1,857 acres and is next to Paonia Reservoir beneath the majestic Ragged Mountains. There are 20 campsites in three separate campgrounds.
Spruce Campground has 6 sites set among towering Blue Spruce tress next to Muddy Creek. It can accommodate tent, trailer and RVs (up to 25 feet.
Hawsapple Campground has 7 campsites and is also next to the creek. It can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Parking spaces range in size from 12 feet to 35 feet.
Anthracite Campground has 7 sites with electric hookups along Muddy Creek. Sites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Parking spurs range in size from 22 to 70 feet.
All campsites have a table, fire ring and grill. Amenities include vault toilets and trash collection. Drinking water is not available. The park also has a boat ramp and picnic areas. Cell service is not available at the park.
Outdoor recreation includes fishing, boating, kayaking, paddle-boarding, water sports, swimming, hiking, biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The park serves as a common winter range for large animals, and it’s common to spot mule deer and elk. You may encounter other mammals like cottontail rabbits, marmots, raccoons, skunks, coyotes and ground squirrels.
Other campgrounds in the general area include Erickson Springs, Redstone, Bogan Flats Campground.
