Penitente Canyon Campground has 17 campsites and is next to an internationally recognized climbing area in the Rio Grande National Forest.
The campground has 3 walk-to tent sites, 12 drive-in sites (tent/RV) and 2 group sites. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grill. Amenities include drinking water, vault toilets and trash collection. Firewood is also (usually) available to purchase from the camp host during (May – October).
Nearby Witches Canyon campground (2.5 miles Southwest of Penitente Canyon) also has 8 walk-to tent campsites (no restrooms or trash collection). The Witches Canyon area also has world class climbing routes.
Other campgrounds in the general area include Zapata Falls (58 miles) and Pinon Flats (58 miles).
Penitente Canyon Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) is an Internationally recognized climbing area, offering more than 300 incredible sport climbing routes. Numerous Trails are also available within Penitente Canyon SRM. Other activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riders, picnicking, stargazing and wildlife viewing. The area is also rich in both natural and cultural history (Old Spanish Trail and early American frontiersmen).
