Ponderosa Campground has 28 first-come first-served campsites and is located at the northwest end of the Soap Creek Arm Blue Mesa Reservoir. The campground has a lower loop (closest to the water) and an upper loop which has corrals for horse campers.
The campground is generally open mid May to late November. Amenities include potable (drinking) water, vault toilets and trash collection. Cell service is not available. Firewood is available to purchase from the friendly camp host. There’s also a boat ramp and boat trailer parking lot near the campground. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grill.
Other campgrounds in the area include Soap Creek, Lake Fork, Elk Creek, Stevens Creek and Cimarron.
Outdoor recreation in the area includes boating, kayaking, paddle-boarding, water sports, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, stargazing and picnicking. Wildlife viewing can also be good in the area.
The land is characterized by semi-arid shrubland with vast expanses of sagebrush. The natural features and ecosystems of Curecanti vary greatly, with Riparian habitats, epic canyons and lush patches of Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and aspen trees.
