Zapata Falls Campground is located on the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range and offers spectacular views of the San Luis Valley, as well as several towering peaks and Great Sand Dunes National Park. The campground has 23 single-family campsites, 1 group site and 1 camp host site nestled among piñon pines along two one-mile long loops.
The sites on one loop are designed for tent campers. Parking spurs on the second loop vary a little in length but can handle trailers and RVs (up to 50 feet). Each site also has a table, food storage locker (bear box) fire ring and grill.
Amenities include vault toilets and trash collection. Potable (drinking) water is not available. Cell service is good in the area.
Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, stargazing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. A new trailhead in the campground offers access to the South Zapata Creek Trail and the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. A second trail from the day use area offers hikers a mildly steep half-mile hike to Zapata Falls.
Pinon Flats Campground (Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve) is 13 miles away. You might also like Penitente Canyon Campground (58 miles away).
