Gator Head Overview
Gator Head Campground has 9 primitive campsites and is located in a remote area within the Bear Island Unit of the Big Cypress National Preserve. The campground can only be access by off-road vehicles, foot or bicycle.
Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water. Campsites can accommodate pickup camper and tent camping only. No trailers are allowed in the backcountry. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grill.
You might also like St. Lucie South Campground or Ortona South Campground. Midway is a developed campground in the Big Cypress Preserve.
Area Recreation & Activities
Outdoor recreation in the area includes OHV trail riding, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing. The Bear Island Unit offers 20 plus miles of backcountry trails. Everglades City is located 30 miles south and provides dining, sight-seeing, and historical sites.
