Hog Island Campground has 21 campsites and is located in a forest of ancient Bald Cypress trees next to the black waters of the Withlachooche River. It offers a great basecamp for paddling in the area.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (35 to 55 feet). One campsite is primitive/tent-only (paddle to). Each site has a table, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, showers, a dump station and trash collection. Cell service is fair. There’s also a boat ramp and a section of the Florida National Scenic Trail at the campground.
Other campgrounds in the area include River Junction, Cypress Glen and Silver Lake.
Outdoor recreation includes paddling (canoe, kayak, paddle-board), hiking, fishing, swimming, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
The Withlacoochee River, Little Withlacoochee River, and Jumper Creek have all been designated as Outstanding Florida Waters, and each meanders through this forest which spans across 5 counties and exceeds 165,000 acres. Withlacoochee is a Native American word meaning “crooked river”.
