Mitchell’s Landing Campground has 11 primitive campsites in a remote area of the Big Cypress Preserve in Florida.
The campground is open Jan 1 to April 15. Amenities include vault toilets. Drinking water and trash collection are not provided. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, lantern post, fire ring and grill. Trees provide shade to most sites. Shared food storage (bear box) lockers are also available. Cell service is poor in the area.
Other campgrounds in the area include Midway, Pinecrest Group, Monument Lake, Pink Jeep and Burns Lake.
Mitchell’s Landing Campground is a popular location for airboat users. It is also part of the Stairstep backcountry unit, the only unit open to airboats in the park. Visitors with an off-road vehicle (ORV) permit can access airboat trails directly from the campground. This location also offers the opportunity for nearby hiking, fishing, and access to the popular loop road scenic drive.
The freshwaters of the Big Cypress Swamp support the rich marine estuaries along Florida’s southwest coast. Protecting over 720,000 acres of this vast swamp, Big Cypress National Preserve contains a mixture of tropical and temperate plant communities that are home to a diversity of wildlife, including the elusive Florida Panther.
