Wilderness Gateway Overview

Wilderness Gateway Campground has 91 campsites and is located along the Lochsa River in a heavily wooded area. This campground is one of the most popular in Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. Most sites are reservable. Group and equestrian campsites are also available.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs (up to 50 feet). Loop A is a group site with 26 campsites and the whole loop must be reserved ahead of time. Loop B has 27 sites with 11 reservable sites. There are 26 sites in Loop C (9 reservable). Loop D has 11 sites and 5 are reservable; this loop is reserved for stock camping only. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grill.

Campground amenities include potable (drinking) water, 2 flush toilets, 11 vault toilets, trash collection and a dump station. Cell service is not available in the area.

Other campgrounds in the area include Glade Creek, Ohara and Johnson Bar Group Site.

Wilderness Gateway – Area Recreation and Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and picnicking. Wildlife viewing is also great in the area. The Lochsa River and its tributaries also offer whitewater rafting and kayaking from April to June.

Several trails head into the wilderness from the campground, including the 15-mile Lochsa Peak Trail and the 27-mile Boulder Creek Trail. A 1-mile birding trail loops around the campground and the half-mile Downriver Trail leads to a scenic river overlook. All trails are open to hiking and the wilderness trails are also open to horseback riding. The Lochsa Historical Ranger Station, a living history visitor center, is located one mile southwest of the campground.
