Assateague Island National Seashore has 104 campsites in its Oceanside Campground and 54 campsites in its Bayside Campground. There are also 5 group campsites, 6 backcountry and 2 equestrian campsites available. Campsites can be reserved Mid March through Mid November. Drive in campsites are also available other times of the year on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Oceanside Campground can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. All are located on or near the sand and beach. Campsites 1-40 (in loops 1 & 2) are drive-in and each has a parking spurs. Campsites 42-104 are walk-to (tent only) sites (ranging from 100 to 200 feet from the vehicle parking area). There are no hookups. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grill.
The Bayside Campground can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. All sides are drive-in, with parking spurs. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grill. Bayside Loop B is a “generator-free zone”.
The equestrian campsites are available mid-October to mid-April. Each site can accommodate up to 6 people and 6 horses. Read more about equestrian camping and horseback riding at Assateague Island.
Amenities include water, flush toilets, dump stations (at each campground), canoe/kayak rentals, day-use/picnic area and trash recycling stations. Campers may not bring firewood from out of state. Please purchase locally.
Assateague Island National Seashore has a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities including seeing the magnificent wild horses that call the barrier island their home. You can also explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests and coastal bays. Outdoor recreation includes swimming, surfing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, biking, hunting and crabbing. You can even get a permit to ride in the Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) zone.
