Fort Custer Recreation Area campground is open year round and has 219 campsites with electric & water hookups. Five cabins are also available for rent. Group camping is available. The campground has flush toilets, showers, a dump station, picnic areas, playground, a boat ramp, shelters, boat launch and a camp store. Each campsite has a table, fire ring and grate.
There’s a ton of fun to be had here including fishing, swimming, water sports, canoeing, kayaking, boating, hiking biking, snow sports (cross-country skiing and dog sledding). There is also a 18-hole disc golf course and equestrian trails. Although you can’t ride a horse and play disc golf at the same time.
Fort Custer Recreation Area has three lakes, the Kalamazoo River and an excellent trail system. Originally farmland, the area was acquired by the federal government to establish Camp Custer. The camp served as an induction and military training center for the US Army during WWII.
Van Buren State Park isn’t too far away (about 56 miles west) and has 220 campsites next to Lake Michigan. You might also like Sleepy Hollow State Park (180 campsites).
