Fort Wilkins Historic State Park has 179 campsites and is located on the northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Cabins and group camping are also available.
The campground has an East Loop (sites 1-81) and a West Loop (sites 101-179). Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Nine of the sites have electric hookups. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include drinking water, vault & flush toilets, laundry facilities, trash collection, a dump station and WiFi. There’s also a playground, boat ramp, fishing pier and picnic areas. Cell service is fair in the area.
Built in 1844, Fort Wilkins was intended to keep law and order during the Copper Rush. The fort tells the story of life on the northern frontier during the mid-1800s. The park also includes the Copper Harbor lighthouses built in 1866 and 1868. Historical interpretation, including the Living History program, is provided by the Michigan History Center from mid-June through mid-August.
The park’s 700 acres has about 1/4 mile of rocky Lake Superior shoreline, Lake Fanny Hooe and a 1/4 mile of sandy beach on Lake Manganese.
In addition to exploring the historic sites visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, water sports, mountain biking, biking, hiking, archery, hunting, cross-country skiing, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
