Big Bog State Recreation Area has been called Minnesota’s last true wilderness. This two-part recreation area includes a northern unit and a southern unit.
The southern unit includes a campground next to the Tamarac River and near Upper Red Lake. There are 31 campsites (26 electric sites) winterized camper cabins, a sandy beach, picnic grounds, and great fishing. Each campsite also has a table, fire ring and grill. There are also man docks located in the campground area (first-come, first-serve).
The 6 rustic camper cabins are available year-round in the southern unit. Electricity, propane heat. Bring your own bedding. No indoor plumbing; cabins are near vault toilets that are open all year, and a family-style modern shower/restroom is available year-round at the visitor center. In the summer, visitors may also use the seasonal shower building in the campground. No pets.
Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and hot-water showers (both at visitor center), vault toilets (in camping area) and trash collection. The park also has a picnic area, swim beach, canoe/kayak access, playground, warming house and a fish cleaning station.
Outdoor recreation includes boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
If you’re heading north, you may also like Zippel Bay State Park or Voyageurs National Park.
