Cascade River State Park campground is located on the North Shore of Lake Superior and has 40 single-family campsites for tents, trailers and RVs (up to 35 feet). Only a few of the campsites have water views. Twenty of the campsites have electric hookups. There are also 5 backpack sites and 2 group sites. The campground has modern restrooms (showers and flush toilets), drinking water and a dump station. Firewood is available for sale from the campground host. Services are limited during the winter (vault toilets and no water/showers or dump station). There are six drive-in sites available in the winter (3 with electric and 3 without). Each developed site has a table, grill and fire ring.
Cascade River State Park is popular for its large waterfalls, hiking trails along the river and its close proximity to Lake Superior. Hiking trails connect with the Superior Hiking Trail and the North Shore State Trail. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are also popular in the winter. Other outdoor activities include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, biking and wildlife viewing.
Bear Head Lake State Park is another option and is located about 115 miles to the west. It has 73 campsites (45 with electric hookups). You may also like Temperance River State Park or Kimball Lake Campground.

When I look at the campground map I can’t match these campsite photos to the map campsite numbers. For instance, site 36 E on the map….which campsite photo is a picture of that campsite?
Hi Tony,
Thanks for heads up. We shot those photos back in 2013 and it appears as if Cascade River State Park has renumbered the sites. We will need to go back and reshoot. In the meantime, we will take the photos down. I’d recommend checking out the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website as they have more info and some photos. Hopefully we’ll get new photos of Cascade River State Park campground up soon!
Hi,
I found this very helpful, showing the old sites and new renumbered sites: https://www.northshorevisitor.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/cascade-camp2016.pdf
Thanks Lily!
We will also update the campsite photo #s to reflect the change.
Are there no pictures of the backpacking sites?
Hi Karen,
Sorry – we don’t have photos of the Cascade River State Park backpacking sites at this time. If you happen to go and take pictures, I’d be happy to post those on our site.
