Downstream (MT), Fort Peck Project Overview

Downstream Campground has 89 campsites and is located next to the Missouri River below the dam of Fort Peck Lake. The COE campground is well maintained and has spacious campsites with level paved parking spurs. Cottonwood trees provide nice shade to most sites.

There are 71 with electrical hookups and 16 tent-only campsites. Five day-use picnic shelters are and 3 overnight group sites are also available to reserve.

Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, a dump station and trash collection. There’s also a fish cleaning station, playgrounds, a basketball court and horseshoe pits. Firewood is available to purchase from the camp host. Cell coverage is good in the area.

Downstream Campground – Area Recreation & Activities

Fort Peck Lake has over 1,500 miles of pristine shoreline with 27 recreation areas located around the reservoir. Boating, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle-boarding and water sports are popular at the lake. The Missouri River also offers excellent fishing. Other activities in the area include biking, hiking, hunting, picnicking and wildlife viewing. A disc golf course is also nearby.

The area surrounding Fort Peck was first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, and the pristine natural condition of the river and surrounding area awed the renowned explorers.

The Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum is also nearby. It offers displays of wildlife dioramas, aquariums, dinosaur fossils and dam construction history.
