Painted Rocks State Park Overview
Painted Rocks State Park is located in the West Fork Valley of the Bitterroot Mountains and has 25 single-family campsites near Painted Rocks Lake. Painted Rocks received its name from the green, yellow and orange lichens which cover the grey and black rock walls of the granite and rhyolite cliffs along the West Fork Road.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site has a parking spur (up to 35 feet), table, fire ring and grill. Campground amenities include vault toilets and trash collection. Potable (drinking) water is not available. There’s also a boat launch/ramp, dock and picnic shelter. Firewood is also available to purchase from the camp host.
Painted Rocks State Park – Area Recreation
Outdoor recreation in the area includes boating, kayaking, canoeing, paddle-boarding, swimming, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and picnicking. Wildlife viewing is also great with opportunities to see elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, black bear, moose, Bald Eagles, Blue Heron and other forest creatures.
Other campgrounds in the area include Slate Creek and Alta.
