Big Creek (Great Smoky Mountains National Park) Overview

Big Creek Campground has 12 tent-only campsites and is located beside beautiful (Big) Creek in a remote and secluded area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The campsites are are a short walk from the parking area.

Campsites are for tent camping only. Each site has a table, lantern post, tent pad, fire ring and grill.  The campground is generally open mid April to late October. Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and trash collection. Cell service is not available in the area.

A limited selection of groceries, camping supplies, visitor convenience items, and food and beverage services are available in the park. Bundles of certified heat-treated firewood are available for sale in the communities surrounding the national park.

Big Creek Campground – Area Recreation and Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes fishing (with fly fishing best in spring), swimming, hiking and picnicking. Wildlife viewing is also good with opportunities to see Black Bear and other forest creatures.

The area also offers some of the most challenging hikes within the Park. Baxter Creek trail begins near the campground and with an elevation gain of 4200′ from trail head to the summit of Mt Sterling. The nearby Big Creek trail offers a pleasant hike along the waters of Big Creek with a beautiful waterfall along the way.

Other campgrounds in the area include Big Creek Horse Camp, Big Creek Group Camp, Cosby Campground and Cosby Group Camp. Harmon Den Campground is also nearby in North Carolina.
