Love, love, love this! I only wish I’d found it before reserving campsite #25 on Horse Head Island for next week. It looks like I’ll be sleeping at an angle. lol. I’ll post a review upon our return.

  2. Ellen Cavanaugh Benson says:

What an absolutely beautiful state park. I’ve been camping for 40 years so I have been to many on the east coast. Pawtuckaway SP has secured the #1 slot by far. We rented waterfront campsite #25 on Horse Head Island for the better part of a week, A word to the wise, if your expecting bad weather avoid this campsite which is downhill from the road and terrain-wise is very rugged, rocks and tree roots every where. We were left with only one choice of tent location, which was to the right of the fire pit if you are facing the water. The weather was supposed to be perfect that week, so I wasn’t concerned about the fact that the tent was directly in line with the water run off from the road. That however became a minor issue when we suffered through unexpected torrential downpours and lightning storms for 36 hours. The water from the road came barreling down the hill directly under the front of the tent and out the back down yet another hill into the lake. It is a miracle that we didn’t get washed into the lake that night. As I said, I’ve been camping for 40 years, so 36 hours of hellacious weather doesn’t scare me… it is otherwise an absolutely glorious place to camp. Clean bathrooms and showers, wonderful scenery, and friendly staff. Waterfront campsites 7, 19, 62 & 74 looked ideal to me.. level terrain and close, but not too close to the bathrooms.

  3. Sandra Tarsa says:

Haha, we had a similar experience at that campsite as well. We were kayaking when “out of the blue” (sky) came this deluge with lightening!! We were paddling for our lives to get back to shore, and got back to find our tent almost washed into the water. Hahahaha, good times!! I love this campground, we go there every year!

  4. Ellen Cavanaugh Benson says:

@ Sandra Tarsa LOL. I presumed we weren’t the only ones that nearly got washed into the lake on #25. When we finally called it a night it was like sleeping on a water bed. I wish we lived closer for weekend trips at Pawtuckaway, but we will be back for sure. I’ve had my eye on #7 on Horse Head but its not reservable online.
