Date of stay: Sept. 9-15, 2019, $4 price reflects NM State Parks Pass rate

This is a lovely park. We arrived without reservations and had no trouble finding a pull-thru, but there would have been dry camping space if we hadn’t. The sites aren’t the most level, but weren’t unmanageable at all. There is fill water available in the park but none at individual sites. Each site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. The showers at the VC (the other shower house was closed) were clean with plenty of hot water. The Visitor Center was never open during our stay. There were several OATV channels available.

There are several pretty trails in the park itself, and lots of hiking opportunities nearby. Bluewater is situated almost equidistantly between Grants and Gallup, each with services and plenty to do. We hiked at Red Rock Park in Gallup and El Malpais National Monument in Grants.

We saw several people camped around and fishing in the lake, but we also saw algae bloom around some of the perimeter, so we didn’t get in the water ourselves.

Critters spotted: wild horses, deer, hummingbirds, bluebirds, horny toad (at El Malpais)

We stayed here on our way to and from Arizona, since it was almost exactly halfway. The first night we stayed in site 15 and it was the most unlevel site in a developed campground that we have ever stayed it. It was borderline unsafe. The second night wasin site 13, it wasn’t as bad as 15, but still pretty bad. Whoever designed this campground didn’t know anything about RVs. Besides being unlevel, they are oriented wrong. Picnic tables and fire pits should be on the passenger side of the trailer and electricity should be on the driver side.

    • Donna & James Skogman says:

We stayed in site #15 last night. With a 30ft Class C. I relied on a photo posted on line. It was not accurate it only showed the picnic table area. I should have read your review instead. We tried to reach the camp host with no luck. We did find a campground associate. He said all sites are booked including handicap spots (I qualify). The handicap spot near us was empty all night. We ended up staying in 15 almost at the road. Our automatic levelers did a good job but the front tires were mostly off the ground. I would rate the campground at a 1.

  3. Wanted to let everyone know that site 15 is a terribly uneven site. It is mostly a hill and the picture is very deceiving. If you have a tent or a camper around 25 ft you may be alright. But we have a 33 ft camper and couldn’t do it. We had reservations for 7 nights. We couldn’t stay and tried to find a different site. That didn’t happen they were all full. So unfortunately we left regretting that we hadn’t checked the place more in the beginning.
