City of Rocks State Park Campground has 50 campsites and 10 of those are reservable sites with electric and sewage hookups. The Park is about one square mile and located in the beautiful Chihuahuan desert region of southwestern New Mexico. The “city” is a geologic formation comprised of massive, sculptured rock formations.

All campsites have nice privacy, with some nestled in alcoves right among the rocks.  All campsites have a table, fire ring and grate. The campground has drinking water, hot showers, flush toilets, vault toilets and trash collection. Group camping is also available.

City of Rocks State Park also has a nice visitor center, day-use/picnic area, campfire center, botanical garden, interpretive trails/tours, 5.5 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. The Park is open year-round and you can click HERE for Park Events.

Two other New Mexico State Parks in the area include Rockhound State Park and Leasburg Dam State Park.

City of Rocks is extraordinary. We stayed there in February 2016 in the electric loop in our 24′ Chinook Destiny. The site was level (no blocks needed) and very clean. The primitive campsites among the rocks in the Pegasus campground looked like the coolest spots ever. One group of campers used the tall rocks at their site to show a “drive-in” movie one night (the sound of which was not detectable to other campers.) The hike around the Hydra trail was easy and peaceful. The restrooms and free showers were clean and adequate. There is a little garden area just outside the visitor center with stocked bird feeders, wildlife water fonts, and benches, which is a lovely little area to sit quietly and observe nature. We saw rabbits, quail, finches, and great horned owls. The sunsets are unparalleled, and the night sky offers spectacular star-gazing.

Joodie, Thanks so much for your great info in your review. We are considering going there in mid-March, a couple weeks from now. Your insight gives us answers we need, we appreciate it. Thanks!

  2. City of Rocks is otherworldly! We’ve returned for another stay because it’s amazing. The campsites are distributed amongst the giant rocks, most well situated for privacy and sweeping vistas (RV area excepted). The dark night sky will delight even the most serious ‘stargazer’. The park has embraced this theme, naming its sites after constellations and offering monthly sky viewing at its little observatory. The compact park’s four main hikes vary from simple walks to an uphill trail on the scenic Table Mountain ~ which at 5700+ ft., rewards with panoramic views. Facilities are well maintained and park access is good. All in all, City of Rocks is superb and we’ll keep returning. L+P in a 25′ Airstream
