Gallo Campground Chaco Culture National Historical Park New Mexico
Gallo Overview
Gallo campground has 33 campsites and is located within Chaco Culture National Park and next to petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling and ancient inscriptions.
Two group campsites are also available, each accommodating 10 to 30 people and no more than 5 vehicles. Group stays are limited to seven days at a time.
Camping reservations are on a 3-month rolling window basis (so 3 months prior to your arrival date). If you’re unable to get a reservation you could try your luck as all unreserved campsites become “first come, first serve” after 11 am. First-come, first-serve campsites (if available) will be issued at the Visitor Center.
Campsites 12-16 are for RVs (tent camping not permitted). All other sites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, fire ring/grill. There are no trees or shade structures to offer shade. Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and a dump station from March through October, then vault. Cell service is not available in the area.
Getting There
Take the route from Nageezi, US-550 to CR-7900 to CR-7950. This access road has about 13 miles of washboard dirt road that is a bumpy ride (in good conditions). The last few miles closest to the park have up to 1-foot-deep ruts you need to navigate, and this is the stretch that truly becomes impassable after rain.
Other campgrounds in the general area include Coal Mine (57 miles), Clear Creek (64 miles) and Rio de las Vacas (64 miles).
Gallo Campground / Chaco Canyon – Area Recreation & Activities
Outdoor recreation includes visiting the many historic sites of the Chaco Culture, hiking, picnicking, mountain biking and wildlife viewing. Dogs are okay at the campground and on trails but must be on leash at all times. Dogs are not permitted in any of the ruins at Chaco Canyon.
You may also be interested in Bluewater Lake State Park. It’s about 75 miles south and has 149 campsites.

Gallo Comments & Reviews
Visited Gallo Campground lately? We'd love to hear about your adventure. Did you find us useful? Did we forget something? Anything our community should know before heading out to Gallo?
Camped in site 34 in September. No drinking water available at Gallo Campground, only a fountain at the visitor’s center.
Thanks Randy,
We made the correction to Gallo Campground (no drinking water available at the campground).
Hi,
Drinking water has been brought to the campground. Note: The walkin sites have been closed… I would check your map to the one on the NPS site.
