  1. Liesje Gebler says:

The Cottonwood Campground experienced a brush fire on July 1st 2017. Although none of the actual sites were damaged, the interior of the loop was burned quite extensively. It may take several months, or even a year before all the brush grows back.

  2. Thea Kavanaugh says:

We stayed at the Cottonwood campground last summer. It is a 15-20 minute drive to the lake pulling a boat back and forth and there is a long mile dirt road with potholes that you have to drive on to get to the campground. Additionally, it rained 2 nights so there was a washout that you have to drive through in order to get into the campground. We have a small SUV with 4 wheel drive but we were not happy to pull the boat through it every time we wanted to come and go but that is the only way in and out. This campground has nice new restrooms but no showers and the 1 shower at the other campground by the lake was closed so we had a week of camping with no showers at large NM State Park. Now for the positives. We love Cottonwood because it is more secluded than the others closer to the lake. The San Juan river is beautiful and the kids can go fish it while we are preparing meals, etc. The sky at night is so clear with endless stars.
