White Sands National Park backcountry campground has 10 campsites set against the beautiful glistening gypsum dunes and incredible starry nights. The hike to the campground is about a mile and campers will need to pack everything in and out. These are all primitive sites with no water or facilities. There are also no tables, fire rings and grills. Permits are required for backcountry camping and are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Visitor Center.
White Sands National Park – Area Recreation
The Park includes one of the world’s great natural wonders – the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world’s largest gypsum dune field. Hiking and biking are popular with moonlight hikes and sunset tours available throughout the year. Visitors can also enjoy picnicking, photography, star gazing and wildlife viewing. You may also spot an Oryx roaming the dunes!
You may also enjoy camping at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park.

3 stars due to the fact that it’s not, in my opinion,worth staying more than 2 nights. It’s beautiful, and exceedingly beautiful throughout the day and night as the light changes. Great for night sky photography. We camped at #9. Although the campsites aren’t truly that far apart there are dunes separating each of the campsites so you get a feeling of solitude and privacy.
