Cottonwood Canyon State Park Overview

Cottonwood Canyon State Park Cabins Bathhouse

Cottonwood Canyon State Park campground has 28 campsites and 4 cabins. It is located next to John Day River in a beautiful canyon with soaring cliffs. Campsites 1-21 are large and spread out. Each of these have a parking pad, table, fire ring and grate. A few sites also have shade structures.  Campsites 22-28 are primitive tent-only walk in sites. One group sites is also available (tent only).

Campground amenities include drinking water and vault toilets. There’s also a visitor center and day use area.

There are also 4 rustic cabins available to rent (Cliff Swallow, Steelhead, Bighorn and Rattlesnake). Bighorn and Rattlesnake cabins are pet friendly.  The cabins don’t now have bathrooms, but there is a modern bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers nearby.

Cottonwood Canyon State Park – Area Recreation

The park has a variety of activities to enjoy including fishing, rafting, kayaking and tubing on the John Day River. The J.S. Burres day-use area has a boat launch for rafts, kayaks, canoes and drift boats. Be sure to check water flow before you go.  There’s also miles of mixed-used trails throughout the park and another 10,000 acres of public land you can access.  Other activities include biking, horseback riding, picnicking, stargazing, wildlife viewing and explore the historic ranch structures at the park.
