East Lake Campground Deschutes National Forest Oregon

East Lake Overview

East Lake 019

East Lake Campground has 29 single-family campsites for tents, trailers and RVs along the shoreline of the lake in the caldera of the Newberry Volcano.  Most campsites are either on the lake shoreline or just a short walk away. Campsites have nice shade and each also has a table fire ring and grate. Our favorite East Lake campsites are: 4, 5, 7, 11, 12 and 13.

Campground amenities include drinking water and flush toilets. There’s also a boat ramp nearby and the friendly camp host has firewood for sale. Paulina Lake campground has the closest RV dump station. Cell service is not available.

East Lake Area Recreation

There’s tons of outdoor fun here including boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, photography and wildlife viewing. Remember to check out the Crater Rim Trail. It’s rated as one of the best high-country trails in the area.  Big Obsidian Flow trail is another nice 1-mile interpretive trail that takes you up and onto an impressive lava flow of 1300 year-old obsidian.  Lava Lands Visitor Center is also worth a visit. It’s located in nearby Bend, Oregon.

Cinder Hill campground is nearby and has 109 campsites.

  1. Ron Herbig says:

We have been camping at Eastlake Campground for almost 30 years, Have been in almost every site. They are all close enough to the water to work.

  2. Janice Gogna says:

Love this lake, campsites next to water is beautiful but gets little windy at times. Fishing is awesome.

  3. Teri Patty says:

Hi! In the list of amenities, for the park, in general, it lists picnic tables, but it doesn’t list that for each tent site. On the map, it only shows them a few sites. Are there really not picnic tables at every site??

  4. Trace Schreiner says:

Greetings: I’ve been searching and it looks like the resort is showing open, are the USFS campgrounds open from the winter snow? We are looking at arrival on 30 May. Thanks

    • Hi Trace,

You can click on the ‘Make A Reservation’ button to check and see if there is availability at East Lake (and other USFS campgrounds). If so, they should be open. Our sources indicate the USFS campgrounds up in the East Lake area are open.

  5. Tim R. Allen says:

I would like to know the name of the campground that is past the Eastlake Resort, but still on the lake ? I look at maps of the lake and it shows the Resort campground but not the one on around the lake to the northeast ?

  6. Chris Leonard says:

Are dogs allowed at East Lake Campground?

  7. what are the campground names at Pauline lake and East lake. I seem to remember their is at least 2 different camp grounds at each lake. Also can you remind me what are the websites to book at book lakes.
