Hunting Island State Park Campground is located in a beautiful semi-tropical barrier island and has a total of 126 campsites and 102 have water & electric hookups (20, 30 & 50 amp). The campsites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RV’s (28 to 48 feet). There are also several tent-only campsites (RT1-RT25), cabins and one primitive group campsite. Hammocks are also okay to use in suitable trees near the tent pad.
Each campsite has a table, fire ring, and grill. The campground has flush toilets, showers, water, trash collection, a dump station and camp store. The Park also has a visitor center, gift shot, grocery store, nature center, fishing pier, a boat ramp, picnic area, playground and 10 hiking trails. Free WiFi is also available. Generators are prohibited.
FYI – the campsite photos have all been updated (Oct 2019) and are post-hurricane Irma.
Hunting Island State Park features a variety of land and marine wildlife. There are five miles of beautiful beaches, a lagoon, and thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest to explore. You can even access the 130 foot tall Hunting Island Lighthouse and take in panoramic views of the coastline and forest. You can also ride horses on the beach from December through February.
Edisto Beach State Park is another option. It’s about 83 miles away (on the coast) and has 228 campsites.

Visited Hunting Island for Labor Day weekend 2013. Price is great, location is great but mosquitoes will eat you alive. Will never visit again during summer. If I ever go back it will probably be in late fall- winter season.
Stayed in Jan. of 2014. Beautiful, quiet, and serene. Lots of wildlife. We had 4 deer bed down in our site one night. Lots of scenery also. Nice facilities. You should visit the nature center and lighthouse. We will be back…
36′ Class A, fulltime.
We camped here last year in our 24 Coachmen travel trailer. The sites and roads seemed tight at first, but once we set up in site 145, we had lots of room, super convenient access to the well stocked camp store and beach. We absolutely loved the park and had a fantastic time. We are booked again for this summer and can’t wait!
I was fortunate to have stayed there in March of 2016. Sadly many of the sites featured in the photos that are close to the beach were wiped out by hurricane Matthew in the fall of 2016. That area is now being converted to a day use area. The sites away from the beach are very nice but the sand gnats can be torture!
You need to update your information. Campsites 1-88 no longer exist. Pictures of some of the campsites are outdated….they no longer look like the ones you have featured. The hurricane was devastating to the park but the rangers and local volunteers have come through the event, making repairs as necessary. They are to be commended. The park is still an absolute jewel.
Thanks Susan,
We have not yet been able to schedule a photographer to reshoot Hunting Island State Park, but will later this year. In the meantime, we will take down the photos.
Super clean and updated bath house! Loved the camp store. Riding our bikes on the beach at low tide was our favorite! Campsites: In my opinion, the higher the site number the better. Our site 167 was nice, spacious and private! The sites near the front were tight and many had large standing puddles everywhere. A family with a large camper spent their time at a site half way in the water. Sadly hurricane damage is still obvious. However, this is still one of the most beautiful campgrounds in SC!
I have been coming to this beach for over 20 years and I love it. I can’t wait to come again.
Incredible!! Super Clean as others have mentioned. Can’t wait to go back. We did have a ghostly encounter however. After returning home and looking it up, the state park, lighthouse, and many of the areas surrounding Beaufort are extremely haunted. Just so you know.
Hi B. Kelley,
Glad you liked Hunting Island State Park! And that’s awesome you had a ghostly encounter! We actually featured Hunting Island State Park in one of our Most Haunted Campgrounds in America articles. Did you get any (ghostly) pictures?!
Do any of the sites have sewer hook ups
Hi Darrell,
There not any Hunting Island State Park campsites with sewer hookups. It does have a dump station though.
