Grizzly Creek Primitive Campground Black Hills National Forest South Dakota

Grizzly Creek Primitive Overview

Grizzly Creek Campground 020

Grizzly Creek Primitive Campground (aka Grizzly Bear or Grizzly Bear Creek) has 20 campsites set beneath a canopy of oak and Ponderosa pine on the banks of Grizzly Creek in the Black Hills National Forest. It is also located between Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs.  Due to tight, sharp turns, towing vehicles is prohibited in this campground. This includes vehicles pulling trailers and fifth-wheels, motorhomes pulling vehicles, and vehicles pulling pop-up campers.

Campground amenities include drinking water, vault toilets and trash collection. Each site also has a parking spur, table, fire ring and grill.  Firewood is also available to purchase from the camp host. Cell service is good in the area.

Other campgrounds in the area include Horsethief Lake, Iron Creek Horse Camp, Willow Creek Horse Camp, Sheridan Lake, Bismarck Lake, Oreville and Bear Gulch.

Area Recreation & Activities

Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV trail riding, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Snowshoeing and snowmobiling are also popular in the winter. From a nearby trailhead, visitors can access the Centennial Trail and parts of the Black Elk Wilderness and Norbeck Wildlife Preserve. Trails weave through the wilderness for a primitive, non-motorized recreation experience. For those seeking higher elevations, a day-long trek to the summit of nearby Black Elk Peak is worth the effort.
