Oreville Campground offers 27 large campsites set on a hillside among aspen groves, Ponderosa pines and grassy areas. The campground is centrally located along Highway 16/385 just north of Crazy Horse Monument with easy access to most Black Hills attractions. It is also near beautiful streams, deep blue lakes and hundreds of miles of trails in the Black Hills National Forest.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site has a parking spur (ranging in size from 45 to 90 feet), table, fire ring and grill. The campground is generally open mid May to late September. Amenities include drinking water, vault toilets and trash collection. You can also purchase firewood from the camp host. Cell service is poor in the area.
Other campgrounds in the area include Willow Creek Horse Camp, Horsethief Lake, Iron Creek Horse Camp, Bismarck Lake, Grizzly Creek Primitive, Dutchman and Sheridan Lake.
Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, mountain biking, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Hikers and bikers can access the nearby George S. Mickelson Trail. The majority of the trail follows an abandoned railroad branch line and includes 4 tunnels, over 100 converted railroad bridges, and 15 established trailheads.
Other possible day trips include nearby Jewel Cave. It is the 2nd largest cave in the world (159.29 miles). Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument and Wind Cave National Park are also day trip options.
