Sand Island Recreation Area campground is located on the banks of the San Juan River in Bears Ears National Monument and offers 27 large single-family campsites. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grate. Two large group campsites can also be reserved.

Campground amenities include potable water (March through October) and vault toilets. There is also a boat launch (rafts & kayaks) next to the campground. Cell service is fair.

Sand Island Recreation Area – Outdoor Recreation and Activities

Outdoor activities in the area include rafting, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, OHVing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Some archeological sites are also in the area.
