Theater in the Pines is a large group campsite located along the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway and next to the Sundance Resort in the Wasatch Mountains. The campground is generally open early June through September (weather permitting) and can accommodate up to 150 people.
The campground has a large (relatively flat) area for tent camping, as well as well as a large gravel parking area. Amenities include picnic tables and campfire rings. Water is not available and all food/trash must be packed in and packed out. Cell service is good in the area. The amphitheater was built by the CCC in 1934-1936 and includes a stone stage and orchestra pit. Unfortunately it has seen better days and is in need of repair.
This is a great base camp for hikers wanting to explore the Mt. Timpanogos Wilderness or visiting nearby Sundance Resort. The trailhead for the 14 mile (round trip) Aspen Grove Trail is near the campground and climbs to the summit of Mount Timpanogos. The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway also passes by the campground and offers motor touring through alpine canyons, mountain meadows and aspen groves. Wildlife viewing is also great in the area.
Other campgrounds in the area include Mt. Timpanogos, Timpooneke, Altamont (Group), Little Mill and Granite Flat.
